~ The Wishgiver ~

The wide-eyed child gazed into the distance
of the elder man's eyes and asked:
"What is the wisest wish to wish for?"

The Wishgiver stroked his long, gray beard
and replied softly:
"If we all were given wishes, my first one,
would be for this."

The child's eyes grew narrow, as he pulled back
his face from the mirror and beheld
the man he had become.

"The wisest wish to wish for, is the one,
that could have been."
He smiled into the mirror as he walked away . . .
And the Wishgiver smiled back at him.
